Networking Protocols for Industrial Automation

IMS MDrive and Liberty MDrive rotary and linear integrated motor products support the majority of networks currently utized by industrial automation applications.

Serial communications methods to transfer data have been standardized for nearly half a century. RS-422 and RS-485 are balanced differential communications interface widely used in industrial networks for multi-drop and multi-point networks.

EtherNet/IP is the most widely used industrial Ethernet solution for factory automation.

Modbus/TCP is used extensively as a solution for factory automation over industrial Ethernet.

CANopen is the standard industrial communication protocol on the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. CANopen technology is used in a wide range of application areas, including medical equipment, vehicles, railway and building automation.

Profinet IO is used for data exchange between I/O controllers (PLC, etc.) and I/O devices (field devices) such as the Liberty MDrive Profinet.
